The importance of breast screening

A screening mammogram is the best way to detect breast cancer early. Cancers as small as a grain of rice can be identified before you or your doctor notice any changes within your breast. Breast cancer treatment works best when the cancer is quite small and has not spread to other parts of your body. The importance of breast screening cannot be underestimated. It could save your life!

Advanced technology

Mammography is a specialized imaging technique that allows your doctor to look inside your breasts using low-dose radiation. It is the best screening tool to identify early-stage breast cancer even before you experience any symptoms. Early diagnosis is critical for successful treatment of breast cancer. Moreland Medical Center offers state-of-the-art mammography procedures that include digital mammography, computer aided detection mammography, and 3D mammography.

  • Digital mammography is a recent advancement in breast imaging that uses advanced electronics to convert X-rays into mammographic images of the breast. These images are transferred to a computer for in-depth evaluation.
  • Computer aided detection mammography analyses digitized mammographic images to look for abnormal calcifications or changes in density and mass of breast tissue that would be otherwise very difficult to identify.

How to prepare for a mammogram?

In preparation for your mammogram, you must discuss any new breast findings or problems with your doctor. It is generally recommended that you do not schedule your mammogram the week before your period as your breasts may be tender. The ideal time is one week after your period. You should also inform your doctor about your past medical history and if you think you might be pregnant. Do not put any deodorant, lotion, or talcum powder on your underarms or breasts as they might appear as calcium spots on the mammogram.
